A 16-year old girl has inspired people worldwide and has become a leading figure in the international fight against climate change. This is Greta Thunberg, an ordinary Swedish schoolgirl, who was recently announced as one of the nominees for 2019’s Nobel Peace Prize. According to a public statement by the Norwegian government, the young Greta Thunberg’s nomination was backed up by three Norwegian MPs.
According to a statement by Freddy Andre Ovstegard, one of the Norwegian MPs involved, Greta Thunberg’s nomination was backed because climate change is one of the major problems of the modern world, but it is often overshadowed by less serious issues. Ovstegard’s statement says that failing to control climate change may lead to worldwide crisis that may be the reason for wars, conflict, famine, and refugees. Hence why she was chosen as one of the Peace Prize nominees.
Currently, Greta Thunberg’s school strikes to raise climate change awareness are supported by countries like UK, France, Japan, Australia, Belgium, Norway, and dozens of others. March 15th is supposed to see one of the biggest protest’s so far, especially now considering the news regarding Thunberg’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
